How to write with style online
Kurt Vonnegut was brilliant as ever in How to Write With Style. (via Jason Santa Maria’s oddities). I enjoyed the full article, but here is the summary:
- Find a subject you care about
- Do not ramble, though
- Keep it simple
- Have guts to cut
- Sound like yourself
- Say what you mean
- Pity the readers
These guidelines are good no matter the forum you’re writing for. I think they are particularly useful for bloggers and others writing for an online audience where attention is short, eyes are tired, and there’s just too much crap to sift through. Your readers will appreciate you for saying something short with feeling.

Authenticity! In today’s information age, we can tell when people are being disingenuous… If they are being disingenuous, we’re going to [click] and move on to the next guy/gal. Someone who’s going to deliver a better brand experience (even blogs who don’t “sell” are a ‘brand.’).
