Friends in the City (Yay!)

I had a day in the “Big Smoke” today, as my mother would say (meaning Vancouver). I’m just a few hours away but due to a busy summer I hadn’t made the rounds in a while. I like to go in once a month or so to renew or make connections and feel the vibe of the city.

This morning I had the pleasure of meeting Vancouver graphic designer Joanne Probyn. She contacted me in August and asked if I could build her new website based on her mock-ups. So I did, and what a fun ride that was! I had my first chance to use JQuery for her gallery pages; integrating it with WordPress in a way that she can update the gallery pretty easily. I’ll definitely be playing with that more… maybe for my own site which has a sad case of cobbler’s kid syndrome… It was interesting to meet Joanne face-to-face after the project was complete. All I can say is she has a very contagious smile and if you’re looking for a graphic designer in Vancouver you should check her out.

I also visited Christine’s new digs on Homer street – quite a bit bigger than her home office was!

And last night I enjoyed the hospitality of my uber-artist friends Sharon Kallis and Dave Gowman. Sharon creates amazingly beautiful sculpture and installations out of natural materials; leaves, hair, grasses, you-name it. Dave (a.k.a. Mr. Fire Man) creates wacky Dr. Seussian horns and does even wackier musical performance art with co-conspirators as the Legion of Flying Monkeys. Not to mention his kick-ass paintings which you can see at Incendio in gastown.

Not enough time to truly catch up, but it is so good to have friends worth catching up with :-)
